ARC18: Amvest Hoofdkantoor - Rietveld Architects New York

Amvest practices what it preaches - putting its enterprise at the heart of its plans for a vibrant residential community at the Cruquius redevelopment of the eastern harbor of Amsterdam. The new headquarters design celebrates the integration of life and work which is the crux of contemporary urbanism.

Just as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote in The Builders there is no expendable component in the design of the Amvest Headquarters. There are 250 handcrafted details in support of the Building Information Management model, none of them but idle show:

Nothing useless is, or low;
Each thing in its place is best;
And what seems but idle show
Strengthens and supports the rest.

That’s because handcrafted details while taxing can achieve a kind of stealth value. They discreetly propel powerful design objectives and therefore make a more compelling design out of normative resources. Longfellow would have recognized how important the handcrafted detail wrought with greatest care is to the perfect BIM model.

In the elder days of Art,
Builders wrought with greatest care
Each minute and unseen part;
For the Gods see everywhere.

The Art of the Amvest Headquarters is as much in each minute and unseen part- in the 250 handcrafted details, as in the whole BIM composition of form and function.
